Hanga Guinea Fowl (Small)

AED 50.00

Hand-carved mukwa wood guinea fowl sculpture, made in Zimbabwe.

The guinea fowl is everywhere in Zimbabwe in the bush, at the roadside, on fabric, in stone. It is one of those creatures so woven into the landscape that its presence is simply assumed. The Hanga captures that familiarity in wood: a plump, upright body that leans slightly back on its base, the neck extended and head turned with the alert, self-important posture the bird is known for.

The form is almost entirely smooth the body a single uninterrupted volume, polished to bring out the warm variation in the mukwa grain. The spotted plumage that defines the real bird is rendered here as small, evenly distributed drill-point marks across the body, darkened against the warm timber. Minimal. Accurate enough. The beak and eye are finished in ebony, the only dark detail on an otherwise honey-toned piece.

It sits on a shelf, a windowsill, or a stack of books without needing to announce itself.
