Tonga Basket — Asilia Terra Orbit (Medium)

Richly layered and full of warmth, this medium, bowl-shaped basket is patiently hand-woven by the Masvingo Women Weavers in Zimbabwe. The design unfolds in striking concentric bands, contrasting a bold ring of un-dyed natural fiber against deep, terracotta-brown fields. Floating delicately within the darker bands are small, rhythmic geometric motifs that resemble ancient symbols, adding a quiet narrative to the piece. A clean, un-dyed woven rim frames this beautiful balance of color and space, radiating from a prominent central square rosette.

Every element connects back to the landscape. Handcrafted from sustainably gathered ilala palm leaves, wild grasses, and reeds, the rich, earthy tones of the background are achieved through a slow, traditional dyeing process using local tree bark and roots. Shaped by human hands rather than a mold, its slight organic variations make it completely unique. It is a functional piece of cultural art imbued with generational skill crafted to bring warmth, texture, and a sense of story to contemporary walls or tabletops.
