Hand-Carved Mukwa Serving Bowl — Utsi

AED 75.00

Hand-carved and burn-etched mukwa wood serving bowl, made in Zimbabwe.

Turned from a single piece of mukwa and darkened through controlled burning, the Utsi bowl has the kind of finish that deepens with handling. The exterior is smooth and unadorned a low, wide form that sits naturally in the hand and on any surface it occupies.

Inside, the maker's work becomes visible. A field of small tessellating marks covers the inner surface, hand-etched to reveal the warm grain beneath the darkened wood. At the rim, a chevron border runs the full circumference a detail drawn from a long tradition of geometric patterning in Zimbabwean craft, worn here lightly.

Functional as a fruit bowl, bread basket, or catch-all. Equally at home doing nothing.

Details

Material: Hand-carved and burn-etched mukwa (African mukwa) hardwood. Natural variation in tone across the surface is inherent to the burning process and the wood's grain. No two bowls are identical.

Dimensions: Approximately 20cm diameter × 7cm height.

Care: Hand wash only with mild soap and warm water. Do not soak or place in a dishwasher. Condition periodically with food-safe mineral oil to maintain depth of tone.
